Two years in planning, next month River City Bangkok opens the most anticipated exhibition of the year, Andy Warhol: Pop Art – a private collection of 128 original works and memorabilia.
Speaking about the exhibition, Mr. Yuthachai Charanachitta, Group CEO of Italthai Group said: “Bringing this collection of original artwork to Bangkok is an audacious step forward for River City and for Thailand. My aspiration for River City is to provide Bangkok a hub for artistic and cultural exchange.”
Linda Cheng, Managing Director of River City Bangkok, shared her vision: “River City Bangkok is a place to celebrate artists, artisans, musicians, photographers, and performers from Thailand and around the world. A place to welcome people from all walks of life to enjoy and learn from art and culture in all its forms. I believe visitors to the exhibition will be inspired by the life and work of this internationally renowned art icon of the 20thcentury.”
Never before has an international collection of original works of this scale and significance been brought to Thailand. ANDY WARHOL: Pop Art is the collection of Mr. Gianfranco Rosini, an Italian born into a family passionate about art. Immersed in that environment, he met many well-known celebrities and artists. People like Judy Galland’s daughter, Liza Minelli who’s portrait by Warhol will be seen in the exhibition. Ms. Minelli introduced Rosini to Warhol in Rome.
Speaking ahead the arrival of his collection in Bangkok, Mr Rosini said: After “I believe that this exhibition is one of the most representative of the “European” character of Andy Warhol, certainly the only one that includes glimpses of his many times in Italy!”
The U.S. Embassy in Thailand is the institutional partner for the exhibition and will be supporting the educational programme. H.E. Michael George DeSombre, United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand, cited “Andy Warhol is one of our most famous American artists, with iconic images exhibited in museums all over the world. We are proud and pleased to share this uniquely American artist, and his distinctively American life story, with our friends, the people of Thailand.”
ANDY WARHOL: POP ART showcases four categories of his work: Self – Portraits and Photos; Celebrity Portraits; Magazine and Album Covers; and Silk Printing and Others. Portraits include Marilyn (1984) and
Liz Taylor (1971). Other works include Interview Magazine Covers and Campbell’s Soup Can (1967).
