As Ukraine’s ‘Harry Potter castle’ goes up in flames, a report revealed five people are killed in a Russian missile attack.
According to Ukrainian authorities, a Russian missile attack on the Black Sea port city of Odesa or Odessa resulted in the deaths of at least five people and left over 30 injured. Video footage from Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s office depicted numerous bomblets exploding near the seafront. Additional images and videos shared by officials showed flames consuming the cone-shaped towers and roof of an educational facility colloquially referred to as the “Harry Potter castle” due to its architectural likeness to a Scottish baronial estate.
Ukrainian authorities suspect Russia employed an Iskander ballistic missile and cluster munitions in the assault. According to Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, Andriy Kostin, fragments and missile debris were found within a 1.5 km radius from the site, leading investigators to believe that the Russian military deliberately used cluster munitions, potentially causing significant casualties. Among the 30 injured were two children and a pregnant woman.
Approximately 20 residential buildings and infrastructure facilities suffered damage from the attack. The use, transfer, and manufacture of cluster munitions are prohibited under the Convention on Cluster Munitions, an international treaty. However, neither side, including the United States, has ratified the convention. Cluster munitions have been utilised by both belligerents in the conflict, with the United States providing them to Ukraine as part of a military assistance package last year.
Meanwhile, Russian authorities report that air defences in Crimea effectively intercepted a significant missile and drone assault by Ukraine. Sergey Aksyonov, appointed by the Kremlin as the top civilian official in occupied Crimea, cautioned against approaching potential unexploded ordnance. Additionally, one of his officials urged people to refrain from recording or sharing videos of Russian air defences in action. Russian military bloggers indicated that the targets were airfields. Temporary closure of the bridge linking Crimea to Russia, crucial for supplying ongoing war efforts, occurred but has since reopened. Russian officials asserted that the attack primarily involved six US-supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), all allegedly successfully neutralised by air defences. Ukraine has yet to respond, and CNN cannot independently verify Russia’s assertions. Remarkably, there has been minimal dissemination of videos or images depicting the explosions.
