Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Sunday that the “intense phase of the conflict with Hamas in Gaza is coming to a close,” with the military’s attention expected to shift towards Israel’s northern border with Lebanon. “In Rafah, the current stage of the conflict will soon conclude. This does not mean an end to the conflict overall, but rather a pause. We will continue to address ongoing security concerns,” Netanyahu conveyed during his first exclusive interview with Channel 14 Television since October 7. Additionally, Netanyahu expressed readiness to negotiate “a partial agreement” with Hamas aimed at securing the release of certain hostages. He reiterated his stance that the conflict would persist beyond a ceasefire to achieve the ultimate objective of eliminating Hamas.
Netanyahu stated that after the intense phase ends, Israel plans to redeploy forces northward for security and to facilitate residents’ return. Hezbollah, backed by Iran and possessing a strong paramilitary force, has attacked northern Israel since October 8, following Hamas’ initial assaults. In response, Israel has targeted Hezbollah militants, including senior leaders. Tens of thousands of Israelis in northern areas have been evacuated due to ongoing hostilities.
During the interview, Netanyahu was asked whether he favoured resolving the conflict with Hezbollah through negotiation or war. He replied, “If there’s to be an agreement, it must adhere to our terms. Our terms don’t include ending the conflict, withdrawing from Gaza, or allowing Hamas to remain intact. I refuse to leave Hamas intact. Our goal is to eliminate them.” Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza following Hamas attacks on October 7, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and over 250 hostages. According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, the Israeli operations have since resulted in the deaths of more than 37,000 people.
