A significant landslide in Papua New Guinea has raised concerns of numerous fatalities.
Local officials and aid agencies in Papua New Guinea are expressing concerns over a massive landslide that has struck six remote villages, with fears of multiple casualties. The landslide, which occurred at approximately 03:00 local time on Friday in the highlands of Enga, north of the island nation in the southwest Pacific, buried over 100 homes. The exact number of individuals trapped in the rubble remains unclear, and there have been no official confirmations of casualties. Enga governor Peter Ipatas described the event as an “unprecedented natural disaster,” according to AFP news agency.
Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape announced that his government has dispatched disaster officials to the landslide site to initiate relief efforts, recover bodies, and begin infrastructure reconstruction. “I will provide additional information once I have been fully briefed on the extent of the destruction and loss of life,” Mr. Marape stated in a release. Online images depict numerous individuals climbing onto fallen boulders to assess the landslide’s aftermath. Many houses seem to have collapsed, with trees uprooted. Reports indicate that rescuers are facing challenges in sorting through the debris.
In a video shared by Facebook user Kindupan Kambii from Kaokalam village in Enga, cries and shouts of distress can be heard. A spokesman from Papua New Guinea’s Red Cross Society stated, “There are reports of deaths and multiple casualties, but the exact numbers haven’t been confirmed yet.” He further mentioned that an emergency response team comprising officials from the provincial governor’s office, police, defence forces, and local NGOs has been deployed to the site. The international humanitarian organisation CARE informed the BBC that it is “currently conducting a situation assessment” regarding the incident. Enga is situated more than 600 km away from the country’s capital, Port Moresby.
