Police reported that a tragic incident in eastern India, train collision killed at least eight.
At least eight people were killed and dozens injured after a cargo train collided with a passenger train in eastern India on Monday, authorities reported, prompting a major emergency response from a top official. The Kanchenjunga Express, travelling between Kolkata and Silchar in northeastern Assam, was hit by a freight train south of Siliguri, stated West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Disaster teams have been dispatched to the crash site, located at the foothills leading to Darjeeling, a popular mountain tourist destination known for its tea plantations and stunning Himalayan views.
Local media footage from the scene showed a train car overturned and twisted, with another car tilted steeply above an engine carriage. At least eight people were reported killed in the collision, according to Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson Sabyasachi De. At North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, 52 patients have been admitted, including nine in critical condition, said superintendent Sanjay Mallick. Some patients have minor fractures. Live images broadcast by local news channel TV 9 showed bystanders outside the carriages, recording the aftermath on their phones. The incident follows a major train disaster in Odisha last year, where over 280 people died in a collision involving two passenger trains and a freight train, prompting renewed calls for railway safety improvements in India.
India’s extensive rail network, built over 160 years ago during British colonial rule, now operates about 11,000 trains daily across 67,000 miles of track in the world’s most populous nation. Despite efforts to improve safety, decaying infrastructure contributes to traffic delays and frequent train accidents. In 2021 alone, over 16,000 people died in nearly 18,000 railway accidents, primarily due to falls from trains and collisions with individuals on tracks. Following the recent West Bengal crash, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow and offered condolences to the affected families. He emphasised upgrading India’s transportation infrastructure as a key priority toward achieving a $5 trillion economy by 2025, with significant investments directed at enhancing the country’s rail system, including the introduction of high-speed trains.
