The death toll from floods in Kenya has surged to 76, with 29 injured and 19 missing, announced a government spokesperson, as authorities intensified evacuation efforts due to ongoing heavy rains. “Nairobi is the worst hit, with 32 deaths and 16,909 households displaced,” stated Isaac Maigua Mwaura, adding that approximately 24,196 households, comprising about 131,450 people, had been displaced. Mwaura noted the establishment of 50 camps nationwide to shelter the displaced. Earlier on Friday, a distressing incident occurred when a truck carrying people in Makueni County was swept away by floodwaters, reported the Kenyan Red Cross. Since March, the Red Cross has rescued over 300 individuals affected by the heavy rains.
Following Kenyan President William Ruto’s announcement on Thursday, emergency crews have been authorised to forcibly evacuate residents from riverbanks and other vulnerable areas. Ruto emphasised the necessity of relocation, stating, “Unfortunately, some may need to be relocated without their consent to prevent them from endangering themselves.” He highlighted collaborative efforts with multi-agency teams to offer sufficient assistance and relocate citizens from high-risk flood zones to safer locations.
According to the Red Cross, flooding has hit 26 of Kenya’s 47 counties. The Kenya Meteorological Department issued an advisory on Thursday, forecasting sustained heavy rainfall in several regions, including Nairobi, with a reduction in intensity expected by Sunday. Flooding in East Africa has also impacted Tanzania and Burundi. Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa stated on Thursday that flooding has claimed at least 155 lives in the country.
