Mexico’s president is pursuing an agreement for the United States to deport individuals directly to their countries of origin.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has revealed that his country is pursuing an agreement with the US to deport asylum-seekers and migrants directly to their home countries, rather than through Mexico. This announcement follows US President Joe Biden’s introduction of executive action, which aims to prevent individuals who cross the US-Mexico border illegally from seeking asylum during periods of heightened illegal crossings. Unless they qualify for specific exemptions, these asylum-seekers would either be redirected to Mexico or returned to their countries of origin. The president’s proclamation, unveiled on Tuesday, ensures the continued flow of commerce and legal immigration across the border.
When questioned about whether Biden’s plan might result in an increase of migrants on the Mexican side of the border, Mexico’s president remarked, “We are pursuing an agreement where, if the US decides to deport, they do so directly.” López Obrador also stated that he harbours no concerns about Mexican border towns being inundated by asylum seekers turned away by the US. Additionally, Biden and López Obrador engaged in a phone conversation on Tuesday, which the Mexican president characterised as “respectful” and “very cordial,” highlighting their discussion on the importance of aiding Latin American nations.
While some critics believe Biden’s migration policy falls short in addressing the high number of arrivals at the US southern border, others warn that closing it to asylum seekers will endanger vulnerable individuals. According to Tonatiuh Guillén, a professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and former commissioner of Mexico’s National Migration Institute, the new rule effectively shuts the door to thousands of refugees waiting in Mexico to enter the United States. This could create a virtual barrier and leave many without shelter. Mexican authorities have downplayed the anticipated impact. A source from Mexico’s asylum commission COMAR informed CNN that the agency is not greatly worried about a potential rise in refugee applications, stating, “typically, migrants arriving at Mexico’s northern border are not inclined to seek asylum in Mexico.” López Obrador highlighted his appreciation for the US’ proposal to construct three new border bridges during his conversation with Biden. He expressed, “This initiative will significantly contribute to economic and commercial development across the region.”
