A tornado in eastern China killed five people and injured nearly 100, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. Dramatic videos posted on social media showed the tornado tearing roofs off houses, uprooting trees, and sending debris flying through the air. “Severe convective weather caused a tornado,” reported the Dongming County Emergency Management Bureau, which added that the local government had established a command centre and initiated emergency response operations.
According to Xinhua, the tornado in Caiyuan, Shandong province, damaged 2,820 homes. Emergency services are currently engaged in “post-disaster disposal and on-site clean-up,” the Bureau added. Although tornadoes are less common in China than in the US, they still occur. China averages fewer than 100 tornadoes annually, and researchers report that at least 1,772 people have died from tornadoes in the country over the past 50 years, from 1961 onwards. This recent tornado highlights the severity of such events and underscores the importance of effective emergency management and preparedness.
In April, a tornado hit the southern city of Guangzhou, resulting in at least five deaths and 33 injuries, according to Chinese state media. Earlier this month, the China Meteorological Administration published its annual ‘Blue Book’ on the country’s climate change status. The report revealed that China experienced its warmest year since 1901, with “extreme weather and climate events becoming more frequent and severe.” Other regions are also dealing with extreme weather, as severe drought and record temperatures affect the north, while heavy rains flood the south.
