Northern Israel witnesses outbreaks of fires following cross-border attacks from Lebanon.
Overnight, large fires erupted in northern Israel, as reported by Israeli police early Tuesday. They attributed the blazes to rocket fire originating from southern Lebanon. According to Boris Eisenberg, chief of the Tiberias fire station, the flames engulfed approximately 4,000 dunams (1,000 acres or 400 hectares) of the northern region. Israel Fire and Rescue Services dispatched multiple firefighting teams, including an air firefighting squadron, to combat the fires throughout the night. On Tuesday, Israel Fire and Rescue Services in the northern region addressed two additional blazes. Twelve teams were dispatched to Keren Naftali, where a fire had spread in multiple directions. Simultaneously, ten teams were deployed to the Biria Forest in the Upper Galilee area, where a falling Israeli interceptor missile sparked a second blaze.
By late Tuesday, the rescue authority confirmed that all significant fires in the northern region had been brought under control. Authorities initiated evacuations as fires ignited at noon local time on Monday in the mountainous Galilee region, Israeli police reported. They assisted in evacuating residences in Kiryat Shmona, a northern city near the Lebanese border. The outbreaks occurred after authorities issued warnings on Monday about an anticipated heatwave and advised against lighting fires in forests. Hezbollah, a Lebanon-based Islamist group, claimed on Monday that it had launched a “swarm of drones” at an Israeli military command centre in the Galilee, resulting in fires within the building. The group asserted that this action was in response to Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah forces and residences in southern Lebanon, further stating that three Hezbollah fighters lost their lives on Monday.
Since October, thousands of Israeli residents have faced displacement due to escalating tensions between Hezbollah and the Israeli military. The Lebanese group cited its attacks on northern Israel as retaliation for Israel’s actions in Gaza. During a visit to the most severely affected areas, Major General Herzi Halevi, Chief of Staff of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), emphasised the IDF’s readiness to respond if necessary. “Through rigorous training akin to military exercises, we are well-prepared to transition from defence to offence in the north. With robust defence capabilities and readiness for offensive actions, we are approaching a pivotal moment,” Halevi concluded.
