Mount Kanlaon volcano erupts, releasing a three-mile ash plume into the sky.
On Tuesday, hundreds of residents near Mount Kanlaon in the Philippines were instructed to evacuate following the volcano’s eruption. The event, which occurred on Monday evening, resulted in a three-mile-tall (five-kilometre) ash column towering into the sky and led to the cancellation of dozens of flights. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that Mount Kanlaon erupted for six minutes, triggering a “strong earthquake.” The agency cautioned that ashfall and a sulfuric odour would impact nearby villages. According to the agency’s volcano summary, forty-three volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the 24-hour period leading up to midnight on Monday.
Images circulated on social media depicted an ash cloud erupting into the starry night sky, while others showed a thick layer of ash blanketing nearby villages. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines reported that over 60 flights from three domestic carriers were cancelled overnight, affecting more than 5,000 passengers. Although the Bacolod-Silay Airport resumed operations by 11 a.m. on Tuesday, passengers should anticipate delays. Following the elevation of the volcano’s alert level to 2 out of 5 early Tuesday, local government officials mandated the evacuation of all residents residing within a 3-kilometre (1.8-mile) radius of the volcano.
In a Facebook video, Jose Chubasco Cardenas, mayor of Canlaon City in Negros Oriental province, urged residents to head to their designated evacuation centres, stay vigilant, and prepare essential supplies such as water and food. Located on Negros, the fourth most populous island in the archipelago, Mount Kanlaon is one of the country’s 24 seismically active volcanoes. Straddling two provinces, it boasts the highest elevation on the island, standing at 8,086 feet (2,465 metres) above sea level. The Philippines is situated along the Ring of Fire, a 25,000-mile (40,000-kilometre) arc of seismic fault lines encircling the Pacific Ocean, home to more than half of the world’s volcanoes.
