US lawmakers pledge to strengthen Taiwan’s defence through a bipartisan visit shortly after China’s military drills intended as a “punishment.”
US lawmakers, visiting Taiwan, vowed to bolster its defence against China after Beijing’s recent extensive military drills around the island. Representative Michael McCaul condemned the drills as intimidation tactics against democracy and pledged to expedite US weapon deliveries. The drills, coinciding with Taiwan’s new president’s inauguration, Lai Ching-te, underscored Beijing’s opposition to Taiwan’s sovereignty. McCaul’s commitment comes amid concerns over delays in US weapon deliveries, especially post-Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Despite close but informal US-Taiwan relations, the US is legally obligated to provide defensive weapons. Taiwan seeks assurances amid escalating tensions in the region.
China’s Communist Party regards Taiwan as its territory and vows to reclaim it by force if necessary. Last week, China conducted military exercises around Taiwan, citing punishment for separatist actions and testing its ability to seize control. Despite Taiwanese opposition to Chinese rule, Beijing under Xi Jinping has intensified pressure economically, diplomatically, and militarily. Bipartisan support for Taiwan exists in Capitol Hill amidst a divisive atmosphere. China’s Foreign Ministry strongly objected to the congressional visit, urging US lawmakers to refrain from interfering in China’s affairs, supporting Taiwan independence, or destabilising Sino-US relations and Taiwan Strait stability.
Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, Lin Chia-lung, praised the visit by US lawmakers as a powerful demonstration of bipartisan support for Taiwan. He stated that the visit symbolised America’s strong stance alongside democratic Taiwan. Lin attributed China’s recent military drills to its discontent with President Lai’s leadership and suggested they also served as a welcome to the delegation. Taiwan’s new leader, Lai, expressed gratitude for the firm support and vowed to strengthen cooperation with the US. McCaul reaffirmed America’s steadfast partnership with Taiwan and dismissed attempts to disrupt it.
