Indian American Muslim group withdraws from parade amid float controversy.
A group representing Indian American Muslims has withdrawn its float from New York City’s annual India Day Parade on Sunday following controversy over a float they say displays anti-Muslim bias. Imtiaz Siamwalla, president of Indian Muslims of North America, sent a letter to parade organisers on Saturday, informing them of the decision. Siamwalla told CNN the group planned to join the annual celebration on Madison Avenue in Manhattan but withdrew after failing to convince parade organisers to exclude a controversial float. The float, announced days before the parade, features a replica of the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir, a Hindu temple built on the site of the Babri mosque, which was destroyed by Hindu nationalists in 1992, sparking riots that killed over 2,000 people.
“We were eager to participate, but the inclusion of a float with a Ram temple replica symbolises bias against Muslims,” Siamwalla said. “The politics of India should stay in India. In America, a land of tolerance, this float shouldn’t be part of the parade.” Reflecting on the 1992 mosque destruction, he added, “Lives were lost, and it deeply affected Muslims.” Ajit Sahi, advocacy director for the Indian American Muslim Council, also criticised the float, saying, “As a Hindu, I reject Hindu extremism. This temple represents politics, not culture or faith.”
The Indian Muslims of North America’s float was initially meant to showcase Muslim accomplishments, featuring photos of prominent Indian Muslims and slogans like “Proud to be Indian, Proud to be Muslim.” Siamwalla criticised the Ram Mandir float as political symbolism intended to intimidate Muslims at the parade. “They want to show minorities—look what we did in our country; we can do it here too,” he said. Parade organisers refused to remove the float, saying it celebrates a sacred landmark for Hindus. Other groups and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who plans to skip this year’s parade, have criticised the float’s inclusion, with Adams stating, “No one should be promoting hate in these parades.”
