Hezbollah launches rockets into Israel amid growing fears of an Iranian attack.
On Sunday night, Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets into northern Israel. This escalation comes as Israeli forces remain on high alert for potential retaliation from Iran and its allies following the assassination of a senior Hamas leader last month. Hezbollah stated that the attack was in support of Gaza and in retaliation for recent Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon. Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that an Israeli strike on Ma’aroub injured 12 people, including six children. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported that about 30 rockets were fired from Lebanon, with some landing in open areas and no injuries reported. IDF instructions to the public remain unchanged amid concerns over potential Iranian responses.
Mediators are intensifying efforts to resume ceasefire and hostage negotiations between Israel and Hamas amid fears of a regional conflict. CNN’s Barak Ravid reported that Israeli intelligence believes Iranian forces might plan an attack within days, possibly before the 15 August talks. The situation remains fluid, with Iranian decision-making potentially changing. In response, the Pentagon has dispatched a guided-missile submarine to the Middle East and accelerated the deployment of a carrier strike group, anticipating a possible Iranian attack on Israel. This follows a call between US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.
Ravid reported that an Israeli source revealed Defence Minister Yoav Gallant told US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin that Iranian military activities suggest a large-scale attack is imminent. As the threat from Iran and Hezbollah looms, the US, Qatar, and Egypt may present a “final bridging proposal” this week to secure a ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed a delegation will attend the talks. An Israeli source said Egyptian and Qatari mediators have informed Israel that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar is seeking a ceasefire. Hamas has also requested that mediators adopt a ceasefire plan similar to those proposed by US President Biden and the UN Security Council in July.
