The Israeli military has withdrawn from northern Gaza, resulting in the deaths of dozens of Palestinians and the destruction of neighbourhoods.
On Friday, at least 50 Palestinians were reported killed as the Israeli military withdrew from central and northern Gaza. Entire neighbourhoods were left devastated, with emergency crews recovering bodies in Gaza City’s Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood. In Shujaya, vital infrastructure was heavily damaged by Israeli airstrikes, according to Gaza Municipality officials. Months of conflict in Gaza have left large parts of the territory devastated. The Israeli military offensive, triggered by attacks from Hamas on October 7, has caused a severe humanitarian crisis, crippling healthcare and depleting essential supplies. The UN has warned of widespread famine in Gaza, exacerbated by Israeli restrictions on aid. Human rights groups continue to call for a ceasefire as negotiations between Israel and Hamas face obstacles. According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, Israeli airstrikes since October 7 have killed 38,345 Palestinians and injured 88,295 others.
Palestinian residents of Tal al-Hawa surveyed the devastation on Friday amidst the sound of Israeli drones. CNN footage showed severely damaged buildings, with children sitting solemnly in the sun. One wall bore the defiant message “Gaza, I promise we will rebuild it.” Umm Ihab Arafat, displaced multiple times since the conflict began, expressed her anguish, saying, “We want a total ceasefire. We don’t want to keep moving.” In Al-Mawasi, a coastal tent city, an airstrike on an aid warehouse killed two and wounded five, according to the Civil Defence.
On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported discovering a weapons workshop and funds for terrorist activities in central Gaza. They stated they eliminated threatening militants in the area and targeted rocket launch sites in Beit Hanoun and Rafah. CNN has not independently verified these claims. In central Gaza’s New Nuseirat camp, a CNN stringer reported four Palestinians, including two children, were killed in an early Friday airstrike. According to the UN, nearly all of Gaza’s 1.9 million residents have been displaced. Many in northern Gaza are reluctant to leave due to Israeli evacuation orders and ongoing shelling, fearing for their safety and accommodation. The UN criticised Israeli evacuation orders for Gaza City, warning they would worsen the suffering of Palestinian families already displaced multiple times.
