The Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov led the convoy, firing a 21-gun salute upon entering Havana harbour, reciprocated by cannon fire from an 18th-century fort. The convoy included the nuclear-powered submarine Kazan, a rescue tug, and an oil tanker. Spectators, including the Russian community and diplomats in Cuba, welcomed the vessels. This marks Russia’s largest naval show of force in Cuba in years. A US official confirmed the Kazan does not carry nuclear weapons. The ships will stay for a five-day visit, demonstrating Russian strength near Florida amid US-Russia tensions over Ukraine. Starting Thursday, the public can tour the Gorshkov for three days.
En route to Cuba, Russian warships conducted drills in the Atlantic, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced. Crews practised high-precision missile simulations targeting naval formations over 600 km away, reported TASS. US officials told CNN that the US deployed ships, including the USS Truxtun and USS Donald Cook, and a P-8 Poseidon plane to monitor the Russian exercises. Canadian assets were also involved. The US has tracked the flotilla’s movements continuously, a standard maritime defence practice, with all vessels in international waters. Pentagon and State Department officials emphasised that this routine activity poses no threat, noting Russia’s annual ship visits to Cuba from 2013 to 2020. This transit comes amid heightened US-Russia tensions after President Biden approved Ukraine’s use of US weapons to strike inside Russia.
Cuba stated last week that visits from naval units of friendly countries are standard practice and do not pose a threat to the region. “Visits by naval units from other countries are a historical practice of the revolutionary government with nations that maintain relations of friendship and collaboration,” Cuba’s Foreign Ministry said. The Cuban Armed Forces Ministry confirmed that none of the Russian ships are armed with nuclear weapons. Cuba has maintained strong relations with Russia, being a key ally of the Soviet Union during the Cold War and hosting Soviet nuclear missiles during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. The arrival of the ships on Wednesday highlights Moscow’s strengthening ties with Havana amid Russia’s war in Ukraine. Cuba increasingly relies on Russian oil and aid as it faces its worst economic crisis in decades.
