G7 summit in Puglia the same place as anti-mafia crackdown amid rising violence.
Around the same time Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that the G7 leaders’ meeting would be held in the southern region of Puglia as part of Italy’s presidency of the economic organisation, local anti-mafia investigators were focusing on three mafia-style criminal groups suspected of causing a recent surge in violence there. According to the Italian Interior Ministry’s half-yearly report released in January 2024, these groups were showing troubling signs of activity. The report noted that the prevalence of criminality “reflects the dynamism of criminal balances and structures marked not only by conflicts between opposing clans but also by inter-clan friction.”
The groups are offshoots of the Sacra Corona syndicate centred around Foggia, consisting of crime families forming clans. Unlike the internationally active Cosa Nostra, Camorra, and ‘Ndrangheta, the Puglia groups mainly operate within Italy and the Balkans, according to DIGOS, Italy’s top anti-terrorism and anti-mafia unit. Based in Bari and Brindisi, where the G7 summit will be held from June 13 to 15, these groups have been conducting brazen daylight attacks and armed car-jackings at an alarming rate. Recent months have seen high-profile vendetta murders and maimings among clans, along with bomb threats and armed raids near the G7 summit venue in Bari and Brindisi. The Interior Ministry proposed military intervention due to mafia infiltration, including in construction projects for the summit. Local authorities are navigating the challenge of securing the summit while addressing local security concerns.
Melpignano noted the significance of hosting the G7 in Puglia as recognition for the region’s collaboration between public and private sectors. DIGOS leads a well-prepared security apparatus, with preventive measures ongoing for nearly a year. A “red zone” around Borgo Egnazia and a “yellow zone” are in place, with over 5,000 soldiers deployed and cruise ships positioned offshore. The Schengen open border policy is suspended, reflecting concerns about crime groups and protests. Military police, along with anti-mafia units, are closely watching known criminal groups. Recent drug investigations led to the arrest of nearly 60 individuals, temporarily disrupting clan leadership. Authorities also focus on protecting other vulnerable areas in the province as attention remains on Bari.
