Student protests in Australia demonstrate that divisions over the Gaza war on US campuses are spreading globally.
At the University of Queensland’s Great Court, rival camps, one for Students for Palestine UQ and another with the Israeli flag, stand about 100 metres apart. Similar pro-Palestinian protest camps have emerged at seven universities across Australia, echoing support for Gaza and U.S. student demonstrations. Violent clashes, as seen in US universities, haven’t emerged in Australia, though students express concerns. Some consider the protests as stirring unwarranted tension. At the University of Queensland’s pro-Israel “Camp Shalom,” incidents like spitting on a Zionist sign worry Jewish students. Palestinian camp representatives at Monash University decry flag destruction.
At the University of Sydney, about 50 tents house up to 100 nightly protesters, aiming for peaceful demonstrations. Concerns arise over US incidents. Jewish groups call for action against perceived antisemitism. Despite a gathering of 200, no direct confrontation occurred, with pro-Palestinian protesters forming a protective chain around their camp. At a counter-rally, pro-Israel protesters attempted dialogue with pro-Palestinian members, who walked away. Tali Hamilton, a science student, voiced horror at recent events and Hamas’ role. The counter-rally, organised by Together for Israel and Stand with Us, condemned a video showing children chanting “intifada” at a pro-Palestine camp, calling it unacceptable campus conduct. Pro-Palestinian groups supported event organizer Randa Abdel-Fattah.
Mark Scott, University of Sydney’s vice chancellor, downplayed the likelihood of a US-style police response on campus. The University of Queensland reaffirmed its commitment to freedom of speech, urging respectful dialogue. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators targeted Boeing-led Research Center, expressing discontent over Boeing’s ties to Israel’s military actions. Australia Palestine Advocacy Network urged universities to safeguard students’ right to peaceful protest, condemning affiliations with companies supporting Israel’s actions. Danny Channan, from Queensland’s Jewish community, worries about the fear among Jewish students due to on-site protesters. He established “Camp Shalom” for discussions but will respect university decisions.
