Protests against Netanyahu erupt in Israel due to a delayed hostage agreement.
Anti-government rallies erupted in several Israeli cities this weekend, with tens of thousands demanding that Prime Minister Netanyahu secure a deal with Hamas to free over 100 hostages in Gaza. Despite security warnings and the threat of an Iranian strike after the unclaimed assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, large crowds gathered at Begin Gate in Tel Aviv. Protesters waved Israeli flags and held signs with images of the hostages, chanting “Release the hostages” and “Human lives above all!” Some stood surrounded by barricades, symbolising the hostages reportedly kept in cages. According to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, 115 hostages are held in Gaza, with 111 taken during the October 7 Hamas-led attack that killed over 1,200 people. Israel’s subsequent offensive in Gaza has killed nearly 40,000 Palestinians and displaced nearly 2 million, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health and the UN.
Family members of captives in Gaza have harshly criticised Netanyahu’s handling of the conflict, demanding an explanation for his government’s failure to negotiate a deal for the remaining hostages’ release. An association representing the families accused Netanyahu of escalating the situation rather than securing a deal to save lives. Opposition leader Yair Lapid urged security chiefs to “tell the public the truth,” stating: “If the government has given up on the hostages, it needs to be honest with the families.” Anger flared after reports that Netanyahu clashed with advisors over a new hostage and ceasefire proposal, which the Prime Minister’s Office rejected as “incorrect.”
Israel’s Channel 12 reported that during a tense security council meeting on Wednesday, senior officials urged Netanyahu to accept a hostage and ceasefire deal with Hamas. Mossad director David Barnea reportedly said, “there is a deal ready, and Israel must take it,” while Shin Bet head Ronen Bar suggested that Netanyahu did not want the deal. Netanyahu allegedly banged on the table, saying the team “don’t know how to conduct negotiations.” The Prime Minister’s office denied the report, stating Netanyahu is committed to the hostages’ release and that Mossad’s head did not say a deal was ready. They accused media leaks of misleading the public and blamed Hamas for hindering negotiations, stating Hamas has been introducing changes that nullify the deal. CNN previously reported that Netanyahu added last-minute demands, reneging on previous concessions.
