Russian strikes hit the key Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, killing at least seven people, as ground troops advanced.
A wave of Russian missile strikes on Thursday (May 23) pummelling several locations in Kharkiv, including a printing house in the regional capital, killing seven people as Kremlin forces advanced. Russian troops, exploiting a weakened front line, have been advancing towards Kharkiv for the past two weeks. Initially, parts of the region were captured by Russian forces but were later liberated. The seven deceased, including at least five women, were civilians working for the Factor-Druk printing company, according to regional governor Oleh Syniehubov. Sixteen people were injured at the printing house, and another seven were injured elsewhere. Images showed the factory reduced to rubble with its facade blown off.
Factor-Druk publishes about a third of the nation’s books and 10% of its newspapers, according to its website. The Ukrainian state railway network was also attacked early in the morning, with six employees wounded, the company reported. A CNN team in the area observed two craters and smoke near a railway line. Civilians have been trapped by the surge in violence engulfing the region. On May 15, Russian forces fired on people trying to flee the town of Vovchansk, killing a woman being pushed in a wheelchair by her husband, Ukrainian prosecutors reported.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the “extremely brutal Russian attack” on Kharkiv and Lyubotyn, highlighting Kyiv’s vulnerable air defences amid Moscow’s renewed offensive. The US recently approved a $400 million package of air defence munitions and other weapons for Ukraine. However, Kyiv officials warn that this aid is insufficient to stop further Russian advances. Zelensky is becoming increasingly frustrated with the condition imposed by Washington and other Western allies that prohibits Ukraine from using the provided weapons to launch attacks into Russia. White House officials reiterated their position on this issue earlier this month.
