Israeli airstrikes on two school buildings in northern Gaza City killed 17 Palestinians, mostly children, and injured at least 63, according to Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal on Saturday. Basal stated that the schools, used as shelters for those displaced by violence, were hit a second time with three missiles, resulting in 17 deaths and numerous injuries. The injured were taken to the Baptist Hospital in the city. The targeted schools, Al-Huda and Al-Hamama, are adjacent and share the same playground. In response to CNN’s request for comment, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) stated that the Israeli Air Force (IAF) targeted what they claimed were terrorists within a Hamas command and control centre.
In a statement sent to CNN on Saturday, the IDF said: “Following intelligence from the IDF and ISA, the IAF targeted terrorists in a Hamas command and control centre. The site, previously known as Hamama School, was located in the northern Gaza Strip.” Basal reported that after the initial strike, more than three missiles hit the area in a “double tap” attack. Basal added, “The first bombing was unexpected and resulted in numerous deaths and injuries. As recovery efforts were underway, the occupation forces warned of another imminent strike.” The Gaza Civil Defense released a list of the deceased, indicating that at least three of the victims were female.
“We don’t yet have a final death toll, but the initial count is 17, most of whom are children. The rescue operation is still ongoing, so we are unable to provide a definitive number,” Basal told CNN in an audio message. CNN footage showed the grim aftermath, including the bodies of residents and injured children at the scene. Israel began its military offensive in Gaza on October 7 after Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing at least 1,200 people and abducting more than 250, according to Israeli authorities. Since then, Israeli actions in Gaza have resulted in nearly 40,000 Palestinian deaths and over 90,000 injuries, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. By early July, nearly 2 million people, almost the entire Gaza population, had been displaced, according to UN figures.
