Researchers at EPFL in Switzerland have created a new type of hydrogel that can be injected directly into bones to boost their density by as much as five times in just a few weeks. Made from hyaluronic acid and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles — minerals naturally found in bones — this hydrogel effectively strengthens bones by mimicking the body’s natural bone-building process. Unlike conventional osteoporosis treatments, which rely on oral or systemic medications and often take up to a year to show results (leaving patients at risk of fractures during that time), this new hydrogel offers rapid, targeted bone strengthening.
The injectable hydrogel was designed to address weak or fragile areas, such as around the hip or femur, where bone strength is crucial. In animal studies, the treated bones showed a significant increase in density, and when combined with standard osteoporosis drugs, the effects were even more impressive.
