Optimism for achieving a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages in Gaza is growing, as U.S. and Israeli officials express increasingly positive sentiments. Meanwhile, relatives of hostages held by Hamas are urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept the current proposal.
President Joe Biden stated on Monday that all parties are “close to reaching” an agreement to bring the hostages home and end the war. This aligns with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s assertion that negotiations are in the “final stages” before an agreement is reached.
Although Israel and Hamas have agreed on a broad framework for the deal, crucial details still need to be settled. Mediators from the United States, Egypt, and Qatar are working diligently to finalize these key points.
It is anticipated that an Israeli delegation will provide their latest response to the mediators on Friday, following Netanyahu’s meeting with President Biden on Thursday. This response is expected to include demands regarding the prohibition of armed forces in northern Gaza and Israeli control of the border area between Gaza and Egypt.
However, families of Israeli hostages remain concerned that Netanyahu may be reluctant to make a deal to end the war. They are calling on the Prime Minister to “accept” the proposal and “stop the war” to secure the return of the hostages. Despite Netanyahu’s assurance that the government is “committed to bringing everyone back,” the families feel that the urgency of the matter is not reflected in the Prime Minister’s public stance.
As negotiations continue, all parties are beginning to prepare for the post-agreement period, addressing issues of security, humanitarian aid, and governance. The United States and Egypt have started preparing substantial aid packages ready to be dispatched to Gaza as soon as a ceasefire is implemented.
