The ceremony, which is held every year on August 6 to mark the atomic bomb’s impact, has sparked debate as some activists argue that Israel, which is currently striking Gaza in response to a recent Hamas attack, should not be included. Critics argue Hiroshima should exclude Israel from its peace ceremony, as it did with Russia and Belarus due to the Ukraine invasion. Hiroshima officials, however, insist they will not exclude Israel, stating their policy is to invite all countries, with exceptions made for Russia and Belarus for practical reasons. Nagasaki has yet to decide on Israel’s invitation for its August 9 ceremony, citing potential impacts on the event’s smooth execution due to the Gaza conflict.
Hiroshima’s ceremony is the largest of the two, with representatives from 115 countries and the EU set to attend. Russia and Belarus have been excluded since 2022 due to the Ukraine invasion. This year’s ceremony occurs amid the Gaza conflict, where Israel’s actions have led to severe shortages and displacement. An online petition with over 30,000 signatures calls for Israel’s exclusion, citing global protests against Israel. Israel denies breaking international law, claiming its actions are targeted at Hamas, not Palestinians, despite global criticism. Japan has strongly supported Ukraine with aid and sanctions against Russia. It has also provided humanitarian aid to Gaza, voiced concern over the situation, and supports a two-state solution. Hiroshima’s invitation to Israel mentioned the Gaza conflict, urging an end to the offensive and expressing regret over the impact on civilians.
The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 ended World War II but caused massive casualties from the blasts and radiation sickness. Each year, Hiroshima holds a commemoration to emphasise peace and the dangers of nuclear weapons. While some advocate for excluding Israel, others support its presence. The Permanent General Mission of Palestine in Tokyo has criticised Hiroshima for not inviting Palestinian representatives, citing a “double standard.” Hiroshima officials only invite countries with embassies in Japan. Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa reaffirmed Japan’s support for a two-state solution and continued consideration of Palestinian statehood.
