Four deaths have been confirmed following a severe storm that devastated Houston.
On Thursday (May 16), Houston was hit by a powerful storm with winds as strong as those of a hurricane, resulting in the loss of at least four lives, the shattering of windows in tall buildings, and the disruption of power to about 800,000 households, according to the mayor. Downtown Houston, along with its business sector, bore the brunt of the damage, strewn with downed power lines and broken glass from shattered windows. Mayor John Whitmire, speaking on local TV station KRIV, described the aftermath, noting that the storm had disabled traffic and street lights throughout the city.
Addressing from the city’s emergency operations centre, Whitmire described how the thunderstorm swept across Houston, the most populous urban area in southeast Texas, with winds reaching speeds of 80-100 miles per hour (129-161 kph). He advised the public to remain indoors, emphasising the need to avoid the badly affected downtown area, which he noted was plunged into darkness and scattered with shattered glass. “The current advice is to stay at home,” he emphasised, announcing the closure of public schools on Friday and urging non-essential workers to also stay home for the day.
The mayor confirmed at least four storm-related deaths, primarily caused by fallen trees. “Currently, over 800,000 families are experiencing power outages,” he stated. Whitmire provided comparable initial storm evaluations during a brief live televised news conference shortly after his interview. He remarked that the severe weather had taken many residents off guard, recalling that he was at a little league baseball game when the storm struck, adding, “We had very little time to seek shelter.” The National Weather Service also issued a flood watch for the Houston area due to the heavy rainfall associated with the storm.
