China initiates military exercises labelled as ‘punishment’ near Taiwan shortly after the island instals a new leader.
China has commenced two days of military exercises near Taiwan, labelling them as “punishment” for perceived “separatist acts.” This move comes shortly after the self-governing island inaugurated a new democratically elected leader. The drills, beginning early Thursday and encircling Taiwan, present the first significant challenge for Lai Ching-te in managing delicate relations with China since assuming office as Taiwan’s new president on Monday. Despite never having governed Taiwan, China’s ruling Communist Party claims it as part of its territory and has pledged to reclaim it, even by force if deemed necessary.
The Eastern Theatre Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) announced the commencement of joint military drills involving the army, navy, air force, and rocket force around Taiwan at 7:45 a.m. local time on Thursday. The exercises are taking place in the Taiwan Strait, which separates the self-governing island from mainland China, as well as in the northern, southern, and eastern regions of Taiwan. Additionally, they are being conducted around Taiwan’s outlying islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu, and Dongyin, situated off China’s southeastern coast, according to a statement by the command. Naval Colonel Li Xi, spokesperson for the command, described the drills as “a robust response to the separatist actions of Taiwan independence forces and a grave warning against interference and provocation by external parties.”
Lai, who began an unprecedented third consecutive term leading the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), is labelled by Beijing as a “dangerous separatist” for advocating Taiwan’s sovereignty and distinct identity. Beijing criticised Lai’s inauguration speech, where he urged China to halt its intimidation of Taiwan, branding Lai as “disgraceful.” In a statement on Thursday, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry announced the deployment of sea, air, and ground forces in response to China’s manoeuvres. It expressed regret over “such irrational provocations and actions that undermine regional peace and stability.”
