The US, UK, and France have urged their citizens to leave Lebanon immediately due to rising regional tensions. This follows the US deploying additional warships and the UK advising British citizens to “leave now.” Tensions spiked after Iran vowed revenge for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and an Israeli strike that killed Hezbollah’s top commander, Fu’ad Shukr. Hezbollah has since engaged in clashes with Israel, including a recent drone attack on northern Israel. Countries have updated their travel warnings amid fears of a broader Middle Eastern conflict.
France has advised its citizens to leave Lebanon “as soon as possible,” according to a statement from the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. Jordan has issued a similar warning, following its involvement in intercepting Iranian drones during retaliatory strikes in April. Turkey has updated its travel advisory, urging citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Lebanon and advising those already there to leave if possible while commercial flights are still available. Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Öncü Keçeli stressed avoiding certain regions and leaving Lebanon while flights are operational. Several airlines, including Air France, Lufthansa, and Kuwaiti Airlines, have cancelled flights to and from Lebanon, with others diverting their planes.
In response to the potential for Iranian retaliation, the US deployed a carrier strike group, a fighter squadron, and additional warships to the Middle East on Saturday. This move represents one of the largest US military deployments to the region since the early days of the Gaza conflict, when two carrier strike groups were sent as a deterrent to regional militant groups. White House deputy national security adviser Jon Finer stated that the US and Israel are preparing for “every possibility” following the deployment. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also discussed the situation with G7 foreign ministers, focusing on the urgent need for de-escalation, efforts to secure a ceasefire, and ensure humanitarian aid reaches Gaza. The discussions emphasised Israel’s security and called for “maximum restraint” to prevent further escalation. In Israel, residents are being advised to stock up on supplies and prepare bomb shelters, with a warning to ensure they can reach them within 90 seconds.
