In the southern Russian city of Krasnodar, residents staged an unusual protest on Saturday due to power outages and water supply disruptions caused by a grid failure amid record-high temperatures. Videos on social media show frustrated residents gathering near their homes and chanting “Give me light” after enduring days of power cuts. City Mayor Evgeny Naumov reported that repair work is in progress and residents are being provided with drinking water. “We all need to remain calm and understand the situation, though it is not easy,” he said in a Telegram post.
The power cuts occurred during an unusually hot period in the city, with TASS reporting that a daily temperature record was set for the fourth consecutive day on Friday, reaching 39 degrees Celsius. Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev attributed the outages to the “abnormal heat,” inadequate capacity during peak loads, and issues with the Rostov Nuclear Power Plant. One unit of the Rostov plant, the largest in the region, was temporarily shut down earlier this week due to a technical malfunction.
Governor Kondratyev noted, “The Krasnodar region has been experiencing abnormal heat for a week, putting a tremendous strain on the energy system.” He acknowledged residents’ frustration with the power outages, stating, “I understand their indignation.” Kondratyev assured that he is “in constant contact” with energy workers, who are repairing breakdowns as swiftly as possible. He also mentioned that the city’s mayor is on-site in the most affected areas and provides regular updates on the situation. Public protests in Russia are rare, particularly since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The government has enacted strict war censorship laws that impose severe penalties, including imprisonment, for criticism of the military.
