Japan prepares as Typhoon Ampil intensifies near Tokyo.
Hundreds of thousands in Japan are being urged to evacuate as Typhoon Ampil nears the east coast near Tokyo. Some homes have already lost power as the storm, currently 121 nautical miles southeast of Yokosuka in Greater Tokyo, has intensified to the strength of a Category 4 hurricane. With winds reaching up to 212 km/h (131 mph) and moving north at 18 kph (11 mph), Ampil has rapidly gained strength over the past two days due to warm waters, which add moisture to fuel the storm. It may further intensify over the next 12 hours as it approaches Japan.
Evacuation advisories have been issued for over 178,000 households, affecting nearly 404,000 people in Mobara and Asahi near Tokyo, and Iwaki in Fukushima Prefecture, as Typhoon Ampil approaches the east coast. Local authorities are urging the elderly, those with disabilities, and residents in high-risk areas to evacuate. Yokohama has also issued evacuation warnings for all residents to be prepared. By Friday afternoon, as rain and winds intensified, over 2,000 households experienced power outages, according to TEPCO. Rail and air services are being disrupted. Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have cancelled about 500 flights at Haneda and Narita airports. Additionally, six bullet train lines, including the crucial Tokaido line connecting Tokyo with Osaka, are suspending services and experiencing major delays.
Meteorology officials have cautioned that northern and eastern Japan could experience severe weather, including strong winds, rough seas, heavy rain, flooding, landslides, and overflowing rivers. They advise the public to remain vigilant and prepared. The storm’s centre is projected to stay just offshore while moving northeast away from Japan, potentially reducing its impact to rain and wind in some areas, including Tokyo. However, a shift in direction could bring the storm closer to the coast or even landfall, intensifying its effects. The storm is expected to weaken by Saturday morning as it moves into cooler waters over the weekend.
