Japan urges 1 million people to evacuate as slow-moving Typhoon Shanshan threatens the south with up to a metre of rainfall.
More than 1 million people in southern Japan have been urged to evacuate as Typhoon Shanshan made landfall Thursday, leaving thousands of residents without power and lashing Kyushu island with gusty winds, torrential rain and dangerous storm surges. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a rare emergency warning for the storm, saying the typhoon was expected to bring damaging flooding and landslides to most of Kyushu, the country’s southernmost main island. The centre of the storm is now about 70 kilometres (40 miles) north of the city of Kagoshima after hitting the mainland with wind speeds of up to 185 kph (115 mph).
Video from Miyazaki, near where the storm made landfall on Thursday, showed fallen electricity pylons and roads littered with tree branches and debris. Though Shanshan weakened before landfall, it’s still dumping massive amounts of rain on the island as it crawls north at 13 kph (8 mph). Slower-moving storms like this can be especially destructive, with strong winds and heavy rains battering the same areas for extended periods. Rainfall has already reached 0.5 metres (20 inches) in many places, with forecasters predicting up to 1 metre (40 inches) in some isolated and mountainous regions. Over 255,150 households on Kyushu were without power as of Thursday morning, according to Kyushu Electric Power.
Japan’s two largest carriers, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways (ANA), have cancelled more than 400 flights in anticipation of the storm. Shanshan is forecast to turn east and move across Kyushu, weakening to a tropical storm by late Thursday. The storm will continue its slow movement over Japan’s southwest, eventually reaching central regions over the weekend and into early next week as a much weaker system. The primary concern for the rest of Japan remains heavy rainfall, with some areas in Shikoku and Honshu expected to receive over 0.5 metres (20 inches).
