The Israeli military secures an injured Palestinian man to the hood of a jeep suggesting a lack of regard for proper handling of injured persons and human rights violations.
During an operation on Saturday in the occupied West Bank, the Israeli military placed an injured Palestinian man on the hood of a military vehicle. Video footage depicts the man lying across the front of the jeep as it moved through a Jenin neighbourhood. He appeared slumped on the vehicle’s hood while passing by Palestinian Red Crescent (PRCS) ambulances. According to the PRCS, Israeli military personnel obstructed their crews from administering first aid to the injured man in the Jabarat area of Jenin.
“The injured individual was then placed on the front of a military jeep and detained before our teams were permitted to transfer him to the hospital,” stated the PRCS. The man’s condition and identity remain unknown. In response to inquiries about the event, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) acknowledged on Saturday that their actions violated “orders and standard operating procedures,” and committed to conducting an investigation. “The behaviour depicted in the video does not align with the IDF’s values. We will thoroughly investigate and address the incident,” the IDF stated in a release. The IDF clarified that the incident occurred during counterterrorism operations on Saturday morning to apprehend suspects in the Wadi Burqin area west of Jenin. They reported that the individual in question was a suspect who sustained injuries and was detained following an exchange of gunfire.
He was taken to the Red Crescent for medical treatment, according to the Israeli military. Violence in the occupied West Bank has escalated since Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza began in October, following unprecedented and deadly attacks by the militant group on Israel. Since October 7, more than 500 Palestinians, including over 100 children, have been killed in the West Bank, as reported by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The UN agency noted that nearly three-quarters of these fatalities occurred during Israeli military operations. In addition to Israeli military raids in the West Bank, there has been an increase in violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians. Over 700,000 Jewish settlers reside in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in settlements deemed illegal under international law, widely regarded as a major impediment to a two-state solution. Recently, the Biden administration imposed sanctions on the Israeli group Tzav 9 for obstructing humanitarian convoys to Gaza, marking the latest punitive action under an executive order targeting perpetrators of violence in the West Bank.
