The Israeli military has ordered new evacuations in southern Gaza, leading to the evacuation of the European Hospital.
On Monday, the Israeli military issued new evacuation orders for areas in southern Gaza, including eastern Khan Younis and Rafah. This forced many residents, already displaced, to seek new shelter, indicating a possible ground operation. The Gaza European Hospital in Khan Younis, one of the territory’s last functioning hospitals, is within the evacuation zone. It has relocated patients, including those in intensive care and babies in incubators, as well as medical equipment to other hospitals “in fear of bloodshed,” according to the hospital’s deputy director and doctors. “It’s a chaotic scene and very difficult and dire,” said Dr. Saleh al Hams, deputy director of Gaza European Hospital in Khan Younis, speaking to CNN. This marks his third evacuation, he noted.
On Monday, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported that the emergency room at Al Amal Hospital in Khan Younis was overwhelmed with injuries after patients were transferred from the European Hospital following an Israeli military evacuation order for the Al Fukhari area. PRCS also noted that Nasser Hospital, which had similarly become overcrowded with patients from the European Hospital, was sending patients to Al Amal Hospital. Hours after the initial evacuation order, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a separate statement saying the order “does not apply to the patients in the European Hospital or the medical staff working there.” “There is no intention to evacuate the European Hospital,” the IDF statement said.
Videos circulating on social media depicted hospital patients on stretchers being relocated through nearby streets following the directive. In April, the Israeli military withdrew its ground forces from Khan Younis after an extended conflict that left significant parts of the city devastated. On Tuesday, Louise Wateridge, a spokesperson for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) currently in Gaza, reported a “massive” movement of people from the evacuation zones following the latest Israeli military order. The agency anticipates approximately 250,000 individuals in these zones to relocate. Simultaneously, Israeli airstrikes and shelling persisted in Khan Younis, resulting in at least eight fatalities and 32 injuries overnight, as reported by Nasser hospital.
