Southern China is being battered by persistent and deadly rainfall, posing a flooding threat to millions of people.
In southern China, tens of thousands of people have been evacuated as relentless torrential rains continue to wreak havoc, triggering flash floods and mudslides. Since June 9, at least 55 people have lost their lives, according to Chinese state media reports on Friday. Dramatic scenes of urban areas submerged in water and buildings seemingly sinking have emerged, with emergency responders using speedboats to rescue stranded residents. The city of Meizhou in Guangdong province has been particularly hard hit, with at least 47 reported fatalities. Guangdong, home to 127 million people and prone to annual flooding from April to September, has faced increasingly severe rainstorms and flooding in recent years. Scientists warn that the climate crisis will intensify such extreme weather events, making them more frequent and deadly in regions already vulnerable to natural disasters.
Earlier this week, Meizhou evacuated over 10,000 people and left up to 130,000 without power, escalating their flood response to Level-I, the highest in China’s four-tier system. CCTV reported 38 deaths in Pingyuan county, with two missing, and over 55,000 affected, causing an estimated economic loss of $799 million. In Fujian province, at least eight deaths were reported due to heavy rainfall affecting about 586,500 people across 40 counties.
In Guangxi, neighbouring southern China, state media reported 48 rivers above flood alert levels, triggering a Level-II emergency response. The Lijiang River, a popular tourist spot in Guilin, faced its worst flooding since 1998, leading to the evacuation of over 6,000 people. These measures come as Chinese leader Xi Jinping urged all-out efforts to safeguard lives and property amidst severe weather. Southern regions contend with heavy rains, while the north suffers from drought and record temperatures, causing power shortages and disruptions to supply chains.
