Amid a wave of violence targeting German politicians, a Berlin senator was attacked in a library.
On Tuesday afternoon, a Berlin senator, Franziska Giffey, was attacked while visiting a library in her district, underscoring a concerning trend of violence against German politicians. The assailant, a 74-year-old male with a history of state security and hate crime charges, struck her over the head with a bag containing hard materials, as reported by the Berlin prosecutor’s office. Investigations into the motive behind the assault are ongoing, with indications suggesting the perpetrator may be mentally ill. This incident raises alarms amidst heightened tensions surrounding political figures in Germany. “The defendant faces a judge today. Due to suspected mental illness, prosecutors seek transfer to psychiatric care,” as the report stated.
Days prior, a member of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the European Parliament faced a serious assault in Dresden, eastern Germany. Meanwhile, Saxony state police reported two individuals detained in connection to an attack on a female Green party politician in Dresden on Tuesday evening. The unnamed 47-year-old was assaulted while putting up posters by two assailants. The Green party in Saxony affirmed its commitment to campaigning despite these incidents, vowing not to yield to intimidation. Additionally, it pledged support for legislation enhancing protection against assaults on politicians. Commenting on the surge in assaults, Berlin Senator Giffey expressed concern over a growing “culture of aggression,” targeting politically active individuals in the country, labelling it unjustifiable and unacceptable.
Scholz condemned the assaults on Giffey and fellow politicians as “unacceptable and cowardly.” “In a democratic discourse, violence has no place. The majority, who are decent and rational, reject such actions.” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed these sentiments on X, emphasising the need to safeguard politicians regardless of party affiliation. She stressed, “We must protect all defenders of our democracy.”
