Two Russian journalists, Konstantin Gabov and Sergey Karelin, have been detained on “extremism” charges, accused of affiliations with a group linked to the late Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny. They are alleged contributors to content for Navalny’s prominent YouTube channel, “NavalnyLIVE,” known for its Kremlin corruption investigations with millions of views. Russian authorities have branded Navalny and his organisations as “extremist,” leading to the imprisonment of some team members and the exile of others. Navalny died in February in an Arctic prison, exacerbating tensions surrounding his movement and its members’ safety.
Gabov purportedly participated in the “preparation of photo and video materials” for the YouTube channel, according to Moscow’s Basmanny District Court press service. He was apprehended on Saturday and is slated for detention until June 27. The court revealed that Gabov works as a producer for Reuters news agency, which has maintained operations in Russia since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. CNN has reached out to Reuters for a response.
Karelin was arrested in Russia’s Murmansk region on Saturday, accused of involvement in an extremist organisation. He previously worked for outlets like the Associated Press and Deutsche Welle until the latter was banned in Russia in 2022. An AP photo showed Karelin, a dual Russian-Israeli citizen, in court. Their detention reflects a broader crackdown on journalists and Kremlin critics in Russia under President Putin’s intensified suppression of dissent since the Ukraine invasion. Forbes journalist Sergey Mingazov was also put under house arrest for alleged dissemination of false news about the Russian army. Navalny’s death in custody, amidst accusations against Putin, adds to the tension.
