เมื่อวันจันทร์ที่ 22 กรกฎาคม 2567 สำนักข่าว TASS ของรัสเซียรายงานว่า ศาลรัสเซียได้ตัดสินจำคุกนางอัลซู คูร์มาเชวา นักข่าวสัญชาติอเมริกัน-รัสเซีย เป็นเวลา 6 ปีครึ่ง ข้อหาเผยแพร่ข้อมูลเท็จเกี่ยวกับกองทัพรัสเซีย
การพิจารณาคดีดำเนินการอย่างลับที่ศาลในเมืองคาซาน ทำให้นางคูร์มาเชวากลายเป็นนักข่าวอเมริกันอีกรายที่ถูกตัดสินลงโทษในรัสเซียในช่วงไม่กี่เดือนที่ผ่านมา

ทั้งนี้ การตัดสินคดีนักข่าวทั้งสองรายในวันเดียวกัน ด้วยการพิจารณาคดีแบบปิดลับและรวดเร็ว ได้สร้างข้อสงสัยว่ารัสเซียอาจมีแผนการใช้นักข่าวเหล่านี้ในการแลกเปลี่ยนนักโทษกับสหรัฐฯ หรือไม่

Russian-American Journalist Sentenced to 6.5 Years in Secret Russian Court Trial
On Monday, July 22, 2024, Russian state news agency TASS reported that a Russian court has sentenced Alsu Kurmasheva, a journalist with dual American and Russian citizenship, to six and a half years in prison on charges of disseminating false information about the Russian military.
The trial was conducted in secret at a court in Kazan, making Kurmasheva the latest American journalist to be convicted in Russia in recent months.
Kurmasheva, an editor for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), a U.S.-funded media outlet, was arrested in October 2023 while visiting her mother in Russia. She was initially charged with failing to register as a foreign agent before being formally accused of spreading false information in December.
This verdict was delivered on the same day that a court in Yekaterinburg sentenced Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, to 16 years in prison on espionage charges. The United States and Gershkovich’s employer have denounced his trial as unjust.
Stephen Capus, CEO of RFE/RL, called for Kurmasheva’s immediate release, describing the verdict as “a mockery of justice.” Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, emphasized that “journalism is not a crime” and urged for Kurmasheva’s release.
The simultaneous convictions of both journalists through swift, closed-door trials have raised questions about whether Russia may be planning to use these journalists in a potential prisoner exchange with the United States.
