A Palestinian author imprisoned in Israel secures the prestigious Arabic book award.
Basim Khandaqji, a Palestinian author who spent two decades in an Israeli prison, clinched a prestigious Arabic fiction award for his novel “A Mask, the Color of the Sky.” Khandaqji, honored on Sunday, received a prize of $50,000 along with support for an English translation of his work. The titular “mask” metaphorically refers to an Israeli identity card discovered by the protagonist, Nur, in an old coat pocket. Basim Khandaqji, a Palestinian novelist born in Nablus, West Bank in 1983, has authored numerous poetry collections such as “Rituals of the First Time” (2010), “The Breath of a Nocturnal Poem” (2013), and “The Narcissus of Isolation” (2017). Additionally, he has penned novels including “The Eclipse of Badr al-Din” (2019), “The Breath of a Woman Let Down” (2020), and “A Mask, the Colour of the Sky” (2023).
Nur, an archaeologist in Ramallah’s refugee camp, adopts the symbolic “mask,” leading to an experimental narrative praised by the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) during its Abu Dhabi ceremony. The novel, published by Dar Al-Adab in Lebanon, delves into the complexities of family disintegration, displacement, genocide, and racism, as highlighted by Nabil Suleiman, chair of the 2024 prize. Suleiman noted the delicate interweaving of history, myth, and contemporary realities, evoking compassion in the face of dehumanisation and a yearning for individual and societal emancipation from oppression.
Khandaqji is currently serving three life sentences for his involvement in a fatal suicide bombing at Tel Aviv’s Camel Market in 2004, resulting in three deaths and numerous injuries, as reported by UAE state media, The National. His brother, Yousef Khandaqji, represented him at the award ceremony held at Abu Dhabi’s Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, stating, “On behalf of my beloved brother, he dedicates this triumph to all Palestinians. He is dearly missed every day, always in our hearts.” Khandaqji commenced writing “A Mask, the Color of the Sky” in 2021. The novel was completed within six months, following years of research. Despite his incarceration, Khandaqji has authored poetry collections and three previous novels, as noted by IPAF.
