A Mexican woman mayor was killed mere hours after the election of the country’s first female president.
The female mayor of a town in western Mexico was shot dead on Monday, just hours after the country elected its first female president in an election marked by deadly attacks on candidates, authorities reported. Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa, mayor of Cotija in Michoacán state, was walking home from a gym with her bodyguard when they were shot by individuals in a white van, according to a statement from the state attorney general. Both Sánchez Figueroa and her bodyguard later died in the hospital, and an investigation has been launched. Confirmation of Sánchez Figueroa’s death came just hours after Claudia Sheinbaum’s landslide victory, making her the first female president of Mexico. This historic win occurred in a country known for its patriarchal culture and pervasive femicide.
Widespread violence against politicians cast a dark shadow over the election, making it the bloodiest in Mexico’s history. Dozens of political candidates and applicants were killed by criminal organisations attempting to influence the vote. Claudia Sheinbaum will assume the presidency on October 1, succeeding her longtime ally, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. His social welfare programs have lifted many Mexicans out of poverty, making their leftist Morena party a favourite in the polls. However, Sheinbaum inherits a nation plagued by gang-led violence and unsolved disappearances, facing an urgent need to strengthen domestic and border security.
Mexico has one of the highest homicide rates in the world and remains particularly dangerous for women, with approximately 10 women being murdered each day. Over 100,000 people are missing in the country, with no explanations regarding their fates. In 2022, the think tank Mexico Evalua reported that around 95% of all crimes nationwide went unsolved. Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa was previously kidnapped in September 2023 in the city of Zapopan and released three days later. Three men were arrested and charged with her kidnapping. Local authorities, including the Michoacán government, condemned the deadly attack on Sánchez Figueroa and her bodyguard. “A security operation coordinated with federal agencies has been deployed to find those responsible for the incident,” stated the state’s Ministry of Public Security.
