Japan’s top general praises strengthened military ties with South Korea amid growing mutual concerns over China and North Korea.
Japan’s top general stated on Thursday that America’s two most powerful allies in the Pacific are elevating their defence ties amid growing concerns over China’s assertiveness in the region and North Korean threats. Ahead of a trilateral meeting with US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., South Korean Adm. Kim Myung-soo, and Japanese Gen. Yoshihide Yoshida remarked that China is attempting to “change the status quo by force” in the East and South China seas, while North Korea continues its “repeated ballistic missile launches and continuous arms transfers” to Russia. Yoshida urged Japan, South Korea, and the United States to “demonstrate our strong unity domestically and globally to ensure regional peace and stability.”
The most notable outcome of this week’s meeting in Tokyo is the bilateral cooperation between Japan and South Korea. On Wednesday, Yoshida met with South Korea’s Kim for the first meeting between the East Asian defence chiefs in six years, a significant moment emphasised by a US defence official. Kim noted that he and Yoshida “share a lot of the same thoughts,” reflecting their mutual perspective on the regional threat posed by China and North Korea. Regional analyst James Brown commented that the Japan-South Korea meeting highlights the significant progress in their bilateral relationship under South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who succeeded Moon Jae-in in 2022.
Last month, Japan and South Korea joined the US in the inaugural Freedom Edge in the Pacific, a military exercise focusing on missile defence and anti-submarine warfare, aimed at enhancing joint operations. Additionally, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin met with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts in Singapore to announce joint military exercises, a notable development given past relations. The trilateral meeting of defence chiefs in Tokyo on Thursday, the first of its kind, highlighted the rapid growth in cooperation among the nations and their commitment to regional security.
The meeting follows last week’s NATO summit in Washington, which emphasised the Indo-Pacific’s importance due to its impact on Euro-Atlantic security. On Thursday, the Japanese and South Korean defence chiefs expressed concerns about Russia’s expanding ties with North Korea. Earlier, Brown noted NATO’s growing interest in the Indo-Pacific and vice versa. Leif-Eric Easley from Ewha Womans University suggested that the swift cooperation reflects a desire to address shared threats before potential changes in Seoul or Washington could endanger their alliance.
