Rescuers are rushing to evacuate communities after heavy rains flooded parts of Bangladesh and northeastern India, killing at least 36 people and causing rivers to reach dangerous levels. In Bangladesh, nearly 4.5 million people have been affected, with homes submerged and residents stranded on rooftops, according to the Disaster Management Ministry. A senior official reported that 13 people have died, and nearly 200,000 have been evacuated from flooded areas. In Tripura, India, 23 people have died, and over 64,000 are in relief camps due to severe flooding, according to officials. Heavy rains have also impacted eastern Bangladesh, causing perilous floodwaters. Scientists link the increased severity of such events to climate change.
As of Friday, Bangladesh reported 13 rivers surpassing “danger levels.” In Feni district, Chattogram, rescue operations are ongoing with army and navy personnel evacuating residents by boat. Over 25,000 people are sheltering in converted government buildings and schools. Videos showed residents navigating floodwaters in canoes and swimming as water reached rooftops. A flood protection embankment along the Gomati River in Bangladesh collapsed Thursday night after heavy rainfall, Navy officer Lt Cdr M. Anwar Hossain said, noting that weak phone networks are complicating rescue efforts. Residents near the river in Cumilla fear their community could be submerged soon, as water levels have risen 10 metres (30 feet), threatening to overtop the flood levee.
Residents have blamed India for the flooding, citing recent protests in Bangladesh over the release of water from India’s Dumbur Dam on the Gomati River. India’s Ministry of External Affairs attributed the floods to recent heavy rains, not the dam’s release, which it claims was automatic due to high water levels. Tripura’s Power Minister confirmed the dam is designed to release excess water automatically. Water levels on the Indian side are at a dangerous 22 metres and are expected to stay high for the next few days, with more rain forecasted for Tripura and eastern Bangladesh.
