Brazil blocks Meta from using social media posts to train AI
The National Data Protection Office of Brazil (ANPD) has announced the suspension of Meta’s latest privacy policy, which allowed the company to use public posts on Instagram and Facebook by Brazilian users to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models. This decision comes shortly after Meta canceled plans to use user data in the United Kingdom and European Union for the same purpose.
ANPD justified its action, stating that the implementation of such a policy could pose “an imminent risk of serious and irreparable damage, or damage difficult to repair, to the fundamental rights of affected account owners.” Meta has been given 5 days to provide evidence that it has amended its privacy policy, exempting the use of personal data from public posts for training generative AI. Failure to comply with these regulations will result in a daily fine of 50,000 reais, approximately £6,935.
Meta expressed disappointment with this decision, asserting that the company’s approach aligns with local privacy laws. The company believes that this decision may delay the development of AI and the implementation of AI benefits for Brazilian citizens.
