Blinken states that Israel has accepted Gaza withdrawal terms in a ‘bridging proposal,’ despite reported remarks from Netanyahu.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Tuesday that, despite reported remarks from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel has agreed to withdraw Israel Defence Forces (IDF) forces from Gaza as outlined in a recent mediators’ proposal aimed at advancing a ceasefire with Hamas. Blinken addressed reports that Netanyahu told families of terror victims and hostages that Israel would not cede control of the Philadelphi and Netzarim corridors, despite pressure. Blinken and other US officials have not disclosed details of the proposal, which involves a phased ceasefire leading to a full IDF withdrawal from Gaza. Key issues remain, including the control of the Egypt-Gaza border and the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes.
A senior US official criticised Netanyahu’s remarks about not withdrawing, labelling them “maximalist statements” that hinder progress towards a ceasefire. Blinken, speaking in Qatar, stressed the US’s push for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Israeli hostages. He noted that it’s now up to Hamas to agree to the latest proposal. Negotiations continue, with senior officials expected to meet in Cairo soon, though the US is tempering expectations for a swift agreement.
Blinken ended his regional trip on Tuesday with visits to Egypt and Qatar, where he had “very productive” meetings with Egyptian leaders. A planned meeting with Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani was cancelled due to his illness, so Blinken met with Minister of State Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi instead. On Monday, Blinken also met with Israeli leaders. Hamas criticised Blinken and President Biden for being “misleading” about their stance on a ceasefire and accused Netanyahu of obstruction. A senior US official noted that Hamas has not yet formally responded to the bridging proposal, and additional discussions will be needed even if an agreement is reached.
