According to statements from hospital and government officials in the Palestinian enclave, numerous casualties resulted from an Israeli airstrike targeting a United Nations-operated school in central Gaza overnight. The school, administered by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), was providing shelter to displaced individuals in the Nuseirat refugee camp when the strike occurred, as reported by the Gaza government media office. Reports indicate that at least 45 individuals lost their lives in the attack, according to a spokesperson from Gaza’s Ministry of Health, with authorities at the nearby Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital expressing concern that the casualty count could increase as more victims are brought in on Thursday morning.
The Israeli military confirmed its responsibility for the airstrike, stating it targeted a Hamas compound within the school. They claimed to have taken precautions, including aerial surveillance and precise intelligence, to minimise harm. This strike followed increased IDF operations in central Gaza amid a worsening humanitarian situation. Reports indicate the school, hosting around 20,000 displaced individuals, was hit by at least three missiles. Casualties were brought to the overwhelmed Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, signalling a deepening crisis, as Gaza authorities warned of a potential rise in fatalities.
The attack coincided with a gathering of American, Egyptian, and Qatari officials in Doha to restart discussions regarding a potential new ceasefire and the release of hostages. These discussions stem from a three-phase proposal, attributed to an Israeli initiative, outlined by US President Joe Biden. The proposal links the release of hostages with the implementation of a “full and complete ceasefire” in Gaza. However, Israel’s Minister of Defence, Yoav Gallant, stated on Wednesday that the country’s military operations in Gaza would not cease to facilitate negotiations on ceasefire and hostage release with Hamas. Gallant emphasised that any talks with the terrorist group Hamas would only occur amidst ongoing military action.
