Thousands of people have been evacuated due to an ‘extremely aggressive’ wildfire raging in eastern Canada.
A wildfire in eastern Canada has burned over 24,000 acres and prompted the evacuation of thousands from Labrador City. Officials confirmed on Saturday that the fire, initially thought to be fully contained, became ‘extremely aggressive’ due to shifting weather conditions on Friday. Premier Andrew Furey of Newfoundland and Labrador reported in a Facebook update that the wildfire rapidly expanded by 22,000 acres, advancing approximately 13 miles in just four hours.
Around 9,500 residents have been evacuated from Labrador City, according to Jeremy Reynolds, a spokesperson for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, speaking to CNN on Saturday. He noted that a team of essential personnel has stayed behind to manage the emergency response. Labrador City, located in the northwestern part of the province, is remote and situated approximately 900 miles north of Canada’s capital city, Ottawa. The wildfire is now spreading just three miles northwest of Labrador City. Authorities have instructed residents to evacuate to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, a six-hour drive away, as announced by Premier Furey.
On Friday evening, an evacuation order warned that the wildfire could significantly approach Labrador West within the next 24 to 48 hours. Meanwhile, Premier Furey stated that an evacuation alert has been issued for the nearby community of Wabush, urging residents to be prepared to evacuate promptly. The wildfire has also forced the temporary closure of the Labrador West Health Centre, Furey confirmed. All patients, including 45 receiving critical care, have been safely relocated to other facilities within the province. The hospital will remain closed until it is deemed safe to fully reopen. “In response, ambulances are stationed nearby to handle emergency calls as walk-in emergency services are currently unavailable,” stated the hospital in a news release issued on Saturday.
