On Sunday, Biden announced his withdrawal on social media, endorsing Kamala Harris to unify the party. This high-risk move replaces a faltering campaign with a new nominee just 107 days before the election, as Trump gains strength from a unified Republican National Convention.

Only a few close aides were consulted, with many learning about the announcement at the same time as the public. CNN reported that his announcement on social media, including one of his closest communications advisers, AnitaDunn and senior aides were informed minutes before the post, while others found out with the public. Biden and Harris spoke several times on Sunday before the announcement, and chief of staff Jeff Zients and campaign co-chair Jen O’Malley Dillon were informed separately. Zients led senior staff and Cabinet calls and will address all White House staff on Monday.
