The cricket-obsessed nation stayed up late on Thursday to see Nadeem achieve Pakistan’s first Olympic medal since the men’s field hockey team won bronze in Barcelona 32 years ago. Nadeem surpassed the Olympic record of 90.57 metres, set by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen in Beijing 2008, with his second throw nearly reaching 93 metres. He raised his arms in triumph as the board confirmed the record, prompting gasps of amazement from the spectators.
In winning gold, Arshad Nadeem defeated India’s sporting hero and reigning world champion Neeraj Chopra, who secured silver with a throw of 89.45 metres, while Grenada’s Anderson Peters took bronze with 88.54 metres. Despite the historic rivalry between Pakistan and India, Nadeem and Chopra’s friendship stood out, and the two embraced, draped in their respective flags, once the results were confirmed. Pakistan is now eagerly awaiting the moment Nadeem stands atop the podium to receive his gold medal—the country’s first Olympic gold since the men’s field hockey team won in Los Angeles in 1984.
Nadeem finished fifth in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a throw of 84.62 metres, won silver at the 2023 World Championships, and became the first Pakistani athlete to reach an Olympic track and field final. He has highlighted the challenges of competing without advanced facilities in Pakistan, a country not known for track and field. Once aspiring to be a cricketer, Nadeem took up javelin in 2015, calling it “the best thing that happened” to him. His victory has shifted some focus from cricket to athletics in Pakistan and sparked debate about the lack of resources for international athletes. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Nadeem on X, saying, “You’ve made the whole nation proud, young man.”
