Catalan separatist Puigdemont has left Spain after evading arrest, according to an ally.
Catalan separatist leader Carles Puigdemont was returning to Belgium on Friday after making a brief appearance at a rally in central Barcelona, despite an outstanding arrest warrant in Spain, according to his party’s general secretary. Jordi Turull, former member of the Parliament of Catalonia, told RAC1 radio he was uncertain whether Puigdemont had reached his home in Waterloo, where he has lived in self-imposed exile for seven years following his failed 2017 secession attempt. Puigdemont’s brief visit to Spain and his subsequent escape, resembling a scene from a crime thriller, angered conservative opponents, who were already frustrated by Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s amnesty for separatists in exchange for support for his minority government.
To compound Sanchez’s difficulties, Turull indicated that Junts (Together for Catalonia) was re-evaluating its support due to the Supreme Court’s ruling that the amnesty law did not apply to Puigdemont and two others, all charged with embezzlement. He stated that Junts’ support would have “a very narrow path forward or no path at all” unless Madrid actively pursued applying the amnesty law to all involved. The charges against Puigdemont are related to a 2017 independence referendum deemed illegal by Spanish courts. Puigdemont maintains the vote was legitimate, disputing the validity of the charges. Sanchez and his government have remained notably silent, declining to comment on Junts’ threat and the opposition’s criticism. Presidency Minister Felix Bolanos informed reporters in Paris that the operation had been managed by the Catalan police, the Mossos d’Esquadra.
Turull, pardoned in 2021 for his role in the secession bid, said Puigdemont had planned to attend a Catalonia parliament vote to confirm Salvador Illa as the new regional leader. However, due to security concerns, Puigdemont opted to leave abruptly, fearing he would be barred from entry and avoiding potential arrest photos. Puigdemont’s lawyer confirmed he had left Spain and promised a public statement soon. Meanwhile, the Mossos d’Esquadra and Sanchez’s administration are under scrutiny for failing to arrest Puigdemont while he was in plain sight. Supreme Court Judge Pablo Llarena has demanded explanations from both the Mossos and the national Interior Ministry.
