Rioters attack hotels housing asylum seekers in the worst UK disorder in years.
Rioters set fire to and broke into hotels sheltering asylum seekers in northern England on Sunday, amid the worst social unrest in years. The violence was sparked by the stabbing of three young girls in Southport, with far-right groups spreading false claims that the attacker was an immigrant. Police confirmed the suspect was British. Protesters vandalised and set ablaze two Holiday Inns in Tamworth and Rotherham, as shown in CNN footage. In Tamworth, protesters threw projectiles, smashed windows, and started fires, injuring one police officer, according to local authorities. In Rotherham, protesters threw wooden planks, used fire extinguishers against officers, set fire to objects near the hotel, and smashed windows to gain entry, police reported. The Rotherham hotel was “full of terrified residents and staff” at the time, stated Assistant Chief Constable Lindsey Butterfield.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has condemned the weekend’s violence, resulting in at least 147 arrests. He warned that those involved will face legal consequences and described the rioters in Rotherham as “marauding gangs” who do not “represent our country.” The UK’s policing minister announced a “nick them quick” approach to far-right rioters but stated that there is no need for military intervention. Dame Diana Johnson confirmed that the police have sufficient resources and powers. The unrest, the worst since the 2011 riots, poses a major challenge for the Labour government. The Home Office also announced increased protection for mosques, allowing for rapid security deployment to ensure community safety and continued worship.
Joe Mulhall, Director of Research at Hope Not Hate, a charity combating racism and fascism, has warned that the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has become a major venue for spreading dangerous disinformation and promoting the protests. In an interview with CNN, Mulhall stated: “The riots and racist attacks are not centrally organised but have emerged from decentralised far-right networks, many of which operate on X.” He noted that key figures spreading disinformation and escalating tensions, such as Stephen Lennon (a.k.a. Tommy Robinson), who had previously been banned, have been reinstated since Elon Musk took over the platform. This has allowed far-right extremists to once again reach millions with their divisive propaganda.
