Israeli settlers assault West Bank village, prompting condemnation from senior officials.
A raid by dozens of Israeli settlers on a Palestinian town in the occupied West Bank has sparked sharp condemnation from senior Israeli officials. Over 70 armed settlers stormed Jit on Thursday, firing live ammunition, tear gas, and setting fire to homes and vehicles, according to Nasser Sedda, the head of the village council. Sedda’s cousin, Rashid Sedda, was killed in the attack. The Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Health confirmed his death from a chest injury. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported that settlers, some masked, started fires and threw rocks and Molotov cocktails before being dispersed by security forces. One person has been detained, and a joint investigation into the incident is underway.
Videos of the attack on Jit show vehicles ablaze and flames spreading on the ground floor of a two-story building. Another clip shows medics performing CPR on Rashid Sedda. Residents are seen rushing to extinguish the fires while someone shouts, “The settlers attacked us and set fire to the cars.” The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) treated three injuries, including an elderly woman affected by gas inhalation and two young men injured by stones. Israeli officials swiftly condemned the violence. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office denounced the attack, promising that those responsible will be apprehended and tried. Interior Minister Moshe Arbel called it a “serious nationalist crime,” and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant condemned the “violent, radical riots.”
Some West Bank settlement leaders condemned the attacks, distancing themselves from the rioters, whom they described as “outsiders.” Israeli settlers have long targeted Palestinian communities. Between October 2023 and August 2024, the UN recorded at least 1,143 settler attacks against Palestinians, with 114 resulting in deaths or injuries. In response, the US imposed sanctions on Israeli settlers involved in the violence, freezing their assets and banning them from entry. Israeli settlements, mostly inhabited by Jewish citizens, are built on land controlled by Israel since the 1967 Six-Day War. While the international community considers these settlements illegal, Israel disputes this. The settler movement has grown in power and is seen as a major obstacle to peace in the region.
