Hamas announced that its political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an Israeli strike in Tehran, a significant event that ushers in a new, unpredictable, and dangerous phase in the region. Haniyeh has been with Hamas for decades, recently managing the group’s political operations from exile. He emerged as a prominent leader during the Gaza war with Israel and played a crucial role in negotiations with international mediators on hostage and ceasefire talks. He was a senior military adviser to Hezbollah’s Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, regarded as his right-hand man, and a member of the jihad council. The US government had offered a $5 million reward for information about him and his location.
Haniyeh was killed on the first day of new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s term, having been in Iran for Pezeshkian’s inauguration. Iran, a key supporter of Hamas, is now facing regional backlash. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement in Haniyeh’s assassination. In comments on Wednesday, a defiant Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to continue fighting, stating that the country is “prepared for any scenario” and has dealt “crushing blows” to its adversaries. Qatar has termed the assassination a “dangerous escalation,” while Turkey’s president condemned it as a “despicable act.” Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement in Haniyeh’s assassination. In comments on Wednesday, a defiant Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to continue fighting, stating that the country is “prepared for any scenario” and has dealt “crushing blows” to its adversaries.
Haniyeh was the second high-profile figure from an Iran-backed group to be assassinated in the past day, following Israel’s killing of a senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed retribution for Haniyeh’s death, stating, “You killed our dear guest in our house and have now paved the way for your severe punishment,” referring to Israel. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the US was “not aware of or involved in” Haniyeh’s killing.
