Hezbollah’s leader threatened Cyprus on Wednesday, warning of an attack if war breaks out between Israel and Lebanon. This is the first threat against Cyprus, an EU member 125 miles from Lebanon, which has held joint military exercises with Israel since 2014. Nasrallah’s comments highlighted Hezbollah’s growing capabilities and warned of severe consequences for Israel if Lebanon is forced into war. Tensions have risen since the October 7 Hamas attacks and subsequent Israeli military actions in Gaza, with increased cross-border hostilities. Hezbollah recently released a drone video showing sites in Haifa, escalating tensions further. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz warned of “total war,” leading to Hezbollah’s destruction and severe consequences for Lebanon. Cyprus’ President Nikos Christodoulides reaffirmed the island’s neutrality in these conflicts.
Hezbollah’s footage, filmed during the day, allegedly shows Krayot, a cluster of residential cities north of Haifa, and military sites belonging to Israeli weapons manufacturer Rafael. CNN geolocated the video to several locations around Haifa, including two military installations, the port, oil tanks, the airport, and residential areas. The footage indicates the drone mission lasted several hours or took place over multiple days. Weapons expert Wim Zwijnenburg told CNN the drone appears to be an “Iranian-origin Qasaf-2k, possibly manufactured locally.” Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav called the video “psychological terror” and demanded a protection plan, criticising IDF commanders for not visiting since the October 7 Hamas attack. Hezbollah called the video the “first episode,” indicating more footage from inside Israeli territory may follow. A Hezbollah lawmaker suggested additional videos in a social media post, referencing Nasrallah’s 2006 vow to target Haifa “and beyond Haifa.”
Israel is preparing for the potential failure of diplomatic efforts with Hezbollah. Following the release of Hezbollah footage, Israel’s military approved plans for an offensive in Lebanon and increased troop readiness, signalling preparation for potential conflict. IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi stated the military is developing countermeasures. Since October 7, Hezbollah has launched over 5,000 projectiles at northern Israel in solidarity with Palestinians, stating it will cease fire only if Israel stops its Gaza operations. In response, Israel has conducted numerous strikes in Lebanon and evacuated about 60,000 residents from its northern border, while over 90,000 Lebanese have fled. The US seeks a diplomatic solution, with envoy Amos Hochstein visiting to ease tensions. Despite this, Israel and Hezbollah exchanged fire Wednesday, with Hezbollah reporting four fighters killed and drone attacks on northern Israel. Lebanese media showed smoke from Israeli strikes on several villages.
